In brief: ‘Baby Signs’ class at library

A free “Baby Signs” class is available at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave., on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The class teaches the parents and caregivers of hearing infants to communicate with their children using American Sign Language. It will be taught in the Shirley Parker Children’s Theater in the Seagrave Children’s Library on the Parkside Level.

Expectant parents are also welcome to attend. Participants do not need to bring their children, but they are also welcome.

Participants can register for the class by calling Jacalyn Marosi at 769-2316 or e-mail jmarosi@cdalibrary.org. Patrons who need accommodations to participate in programs or to access library services are asked to contact the staff.

Gallery tour at Old Church

The Arts and Cultural Center at The Old Church, 405 William St., will host a gallery tour Sunday at 2 p.m. with Ernest Fokes , a retired neurosurgeon, whose palladium and platinum photography has been shown nationally and internationally.

Fokes will be on hand to discuss his technique and to provide an artist’s insight into each of the pieces on display. He studied palladium and platinum photography under Dick Arentz, one of the pioneers of the technique.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and by appointment.

Annual pottery event Saturday

The Clay Arts Guild of North Idaho Inc. will host the fourth annual Christmas Pottery Event, Mud and Spirits, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Arts and Cultural Center at The Old Church. Admission is free.

More than 20 potters will be showing a variety of functional and sculptural pottery. Highlights include live music and hourly pottery raffles. A mural, created by children from last year’s Art on the Edge’s Mardi Gras event, will be unveiled to the community for the first time. More than 100 children contributed to the mural that will be eventually hang in a public place for the community to enjoy.

The Old Church is at the corner of Fourth Avenue and William Street, just off the Spokane Street I-90 exit in Post Falls.
