Packed house enjoys farewell meal at Captain’s Wheel

Herb Huseland Correspondent

Bayview turned quiet last week, as people targeted the dinner table. Turkeys, however, didn’t fare so well.

The Captain’s Wheel Restaurant’s farewell party to evicted Bayview Trailer Park residents was a great success. The residents are being ousted to make way for lakeshore condominiums. The house was packed, as folks chowed down on turkey and dressing, provided by the restaurant, and some side dishes brought by friends.

The duo, Good N’ Plenty, was just that, playing just about every type of music imaginable. Good N’ Plenty used to play at Betty’s in Athol in the old days before it became the Rib Ranch .We met some real nice people there, too. A couple noticeably affectionate out on the dance floor, could have been mistaken for newlyweds, except they weren’t. Charlotte and Dave Billow, of Spokane, it turns out, have been married to each other 46 years, and appear to be just as much in love as the first year. Dave flies a corporate Lear Jet, while Charlotte is a retired registered nurse.

Rib Ranch serving breakfast, lunch

Speaking of the Rib Ranch, it’s always a great dinner spot, but it now serves breakfast and lunch as well. The attached cocktail lounge, Crossroads, features karaoke Friday, Saturday and Wednesday nights, so tune up those vocal chords and sashay on down.

We previously wrote about Attitudes Salon, and next door, the Saddle-Up Cafe. Your reporter caught a hat trick recently – had a late lunch at the Saddle-Up, the special being cherry wood-smoked prime rib on a hoagie roll.. It was everything they say about it. Smoked right on the premises, Suz and Howie did it right. Then on to Attitudes for my ears to be lowered, on to the Legion for the latest news and to leave off copies of Your Voice for “Dump truck” Debbie, who, after winning the chili contest recently, took off for a vacation in Belize. Apparently, the extra hot chili reminded her of the need for heat. We no sooner sat down, then in popped Debbie.

Captain’s Wheel entertainment

Back in Bayview, The Keep entertained everyone at the Captain’s Wheel on Saturday. They will also appear New Year’s Eve. The No Jugs Band will appear Dec. 8. This band is basically made up of Steve Cripe on drums, Rick Steiner, keyboard and vocals, and George Bruner, lead guitar and vocals. Last time they appeared, friends were brought along. Buzz Daldos on Sax and Shane Edwards, singer, sat in. This band, plus many friends hang out at the Linger Longer in Spirit Lake on Sundays, for open-mike jams.

Christmas Bazaar Saturday

Bab’s Women’s club announced their annual Christmas Bazaar will be Saturdayfrom 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bayview Community Center. Homemade soups, salads and breads, all you can eat, plus raffles of gift baskets, bake sale, crafts and more. All proceeds, as usual, will go to the various charities that Bab’s support.

Also at the Captain’s Wheel, the annual Christmas Party will feature Good N’ Plenty, with special guest and longtime tradition, the legendary Slim Dossey. Slim used to anchor the annual party, but age and infirmities have reduced his role. The party is Dec. 16.

Waterford Park’s Button Hook has closed for the season, and will reopen in March.
