Ducks hold off Kansas State

Bryce Taylor scored 11 of his 18 points after halftime, and Maarty Leunen had 14 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 17 Oregon hold off No. 25 Kansas State 80-77 in overtime Thursday night at Manhattan, Kan.

Oregon (6-1) struggled early and came on late, hitting big shots down the stretch of regulation and overpowering the Wildcats in overtime. Joevan Catron had 15 points and Tajuan Porter added 14 for the Ducks.

Kansas State (5-2) was able to slow down the high-scoring Ducks, but struggled from the perimeter – 8 for 27 from 3-point range – and missed four free throws in overtime, finishing 5 of 12 from the line. Freshman Michael Beasley had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Andre Gilbert added 16 points.

Kansas State found a way to hold Oregon down early, keeping the Ducks from getting out on the break and making them work for every shot. Oregon took just seven 3-point shots in the first half, making two, and managed 29 points – 14 below its average.

(22) USC 66, Oklahoma 55: At Los Angeles, Davon Jefferson scored 23 points and fellow freshman O.J. Mayo took charge down the stretch to lead the Trojans (6-1) past the Sooners (5-2).

The game was the first basketball meeting between the schools in 24 years.

Mayo scored 11 consecutive points beginning with 6:48 remaining as the Trojans opened a 60-48 lead with 3:35 to play.

He finished with 18 points, 15 in the second half.

Women

(2) UConn 80, BYU 34: At Hartford, Conn., freshman Maya Moore scored 17 points to lead the Huskies (6-0) to a victory over the Cougars (3-3).

(4) North Carolina 90, Purdue 72: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Rashanda McCants scored 28 points and the Tar Heels (9-0) beat the Boilermakers (2-4).

(7) Georgia 69, Oakland 59: At Athens, Ga., Tasha Humphrey scored 19 points in the second half to lead the Bulldogs (7-0) to a win over the Grizzlies (3-2).

(8) LSU 77, Houston 46: At Houston, Sylvia Fowles had 19 points to lead the Tigers (5-2) past the Cougars (2-6).

(10) Baylor 81, Southeast Missouri 51: At Cape Girardeau, Mo., Rachel Allison had 20 points to lead the Bears (6-0) past the Redhawks (4-3).
