Riley powers Pirates
Freshman guard David Riley scored 23 points Thursday as Whitworth opened the 60th annual Lee Fulmer Memorial men’s basketball tournament with a 90-64 win over Southwestern (Ariz.) College at Redlands, Calif.
Riley shot 9 of 15 from the floor. Drew Bruns came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 3-pointers and score 14 points for the Pirates (2-1).
Whitworth will play tonight against Pomona-Pitzer.
•David Johnson scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures as host North Idaho (5-0) pulled away for a 94-72 win over Green River (1-2) to open the Scenic West Athletic Conference Challenge.
In other games, Snow defeated Grant MacEwan 99-57 and Salt Lake topped Edmonds 80-43.
Football
Junior Brandon Gibson, who set Washington State’s single-season record with 1,180 receiving yards, was named to the Rivals.com All-Pacific-10 Conference first team on Wednesday.
Senior tight end Jed Collins and sophomore linebacker Andy Mattingly (Mead High) of WSU were named to the second team.
Volleyball
Veranie Willis had 18 kills as second-ranked California-Baptist (30-4) knocked Lewis-Clark State College out of the NAIA national tournament with a 30-23, 30-15, 30-19 win to complete pool play at Columbia (Mo.) College.
The ninth-seeded Warriors (26-8) finished pool play 1-2, having defeated Virginia-Wise (25-16) 30-17, 30-17, 30-19 to open the day. Anile Clemente had 12 kills, Lisa Davis 22 assists and Lindsay Scott 13 digs for the Warriors.
Clemente also had 12 kills against California-Baptist, and Cintia Alessi added 11 kills.
Women’s swimming
Brittany Gresset broke Whitworth’s school record in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 24.09 seconds at the University of Washington Husky Invitational at Federal Way, Wash.
