Area roundup: Pirates top Missionaries to halt three-game skid

Sarah Rusch totaled 21 kills to help the Whitworth Pirates (8-7, 3-4) end a three-match losing streak with a 30-25, 26-30, 26-30, 30-22, 30-23 Northwest Conference volleyball victory over the visiting Whitman Missionaries (7-8, 3-4) on Wednesday night.

Tracy Schwada added 11 kills and Holly Ridings pitched in with 42 assists for the Pirates.

“Walla Walla (19-3, 6-1) took over second place in the NWAACC East Region with a 30-20, 30-23, 26-30, 26-30, 15-8 win over the visiting CC Spokane Sasquatch (14-7, 5-2). Lisa Steinbach led CCS with 10 kills.

Football

Former Northern Arizona University quarterback Jason Murietta has been added to the Spokane Shock roster for the 2008 af2 season.

Murietta, who graduated in 2006, holds the school record for career touchdown passes with 94.

His 10,717 career passing yards are second in school history and sixth best in Big Sky Conference history.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga University senior defender Daniel Scott and Santa Clara’s Peter Lowry were named West Coast Conference co-players of the month. Scott helped the Bulldogs get off to a 5-1-1 start and a No. 12 ranking.

Women’s soccer

Rachel Lopez scored a goal at the 55-minute mark to help the North Idaho Cardinals earn a 2-2 tie with the Eastern Washington University Eagles junior varsity in Coeur d’Alene.

Megan Wells staked NIC (5-4-2) to a 1-0 lead with a goal 12:50 into the match.

EWU bounced back to take a 2-1 lead at the half on two goals by Teryn Taylor – in the 30th and 39th minutes.
