Fall fishing derby

In other news, the big fall fishing derby is about ready to kick off this weekend. Octoberfish, sponsored by Bayview’s Chamber of Commerce, starts with an auction of sporting goods donated by local businesses and individuals. It will be held at the Captain’s Wheel Friday starting at 6 p.m. Registration for the derby will be available there, and at Ralph’s Internet Coffee House. The derby will start at dawn Saturday; the final deadline being 3 p.m. Sunday. Awards will be made at the Captain’s Wheel following the derby.

Last year, the chamber paid out more than $8,000 in prizes. The payout this year, the derby’s third year, is expected to top that.

The first year, 162 entrants participated. Last year, 178 took part. Ralph Jones, activity coordinator, predicted more than 200 for this year. The Captain’s Wheel will serve complimentary brats and other German-style food to derby participants.
