In brief: No speed change in Valleyford

The Spokesman-Review

Spokane County commissioners have rejected a proposal to reduce the speed limit on the Palouse Highway in Valleyford.

County Engineer Bob Brueggeman had recommended reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph to improve pedestrian safety. He noted that about 4,000 cars pass through the community daily.

However, a majority of residents who testified and sent letter were opposed to the change. Commissioners visited the site before making their decision last week.

VERADALE

Women’s chrorus to sing

The Spirit of Spokane women’s barbershop chorus will sing for free this weekend, just a few days before heading to the International Sweet Adeline Contest in Calgary.

The concert, a preview of the chorus’ Calgary performance, will be Saturday at 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road. Three guest quartets also will perform.

The award-winning Spokane chorus is one of only 35 groups worldwide to advance to the international competition next Thursday. The top 10 choruses then advance to the final round Oct. 13.

“This is our fifth time to compete on the international stage,” said Dee Pearson of Post Falls. “There will be 75 of us going and we’re all very excited.”

While the Saturday event is free, folks are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for local food banks.

To learn more about the group go to www.spiritofspokanechorus.com or call 710-4452.
