What makes for a great scarecrow? You be the judge at the Fall Scarecrow Contest, courtesy of Seltice Center Merchants within the strip mall at 203-205 E. Seltice Way in Post Falls.

A lineup of 17 scarecrows will be on display during regular business hours. Vote for your favorite. And bring the kids. Merchants will have special goodies for them.

On Oct. 17, the scarecrows will be moved to the Guardian Angel Homes and the Post Falls Senior Center for the senior citizens’ viewing pleasure.

Participating merchants include: Down the Street Restaurant, All About You Salon and Tanning, Second Thoughts Consignment Boutique, Agape Ranch Bath Salts and More, Floral Design and Auto Paint Plus.

Learn how to fly-fish

North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits is leading a clinic and weekend trip to teach participants how to fly-fish.

The Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinic will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday on the lower level of NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building. The clinic will be followed by a weekend camping and fly-fishing trip on the St. Joe River Oct. 13 and Oct. 14.

The clinic is designed as an introduction to fly-fishing for the novice fisherman. A variety of topics will be covered, including casting, fly selection and stream geography.

A $45 fee covers both transportation and instruction. Gear is not provided, but can be rented from Castaway Fly Fishing Shop at 1114 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d’Alene. Space is limited. For more information, call 769-7809.
