AUTO RACING

This week’s events

By Brian Kacharaba

All Times PDT

NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

UAW-Ford 500

Site: Talladega, Ala.

Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 10 a.m.); Sunday, race (ABC, 10 a.m.).

Track: Talladega Superspeedway (tri-oval, 2.66 miles, 33 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 500 miles, 188 laps.

Last race: Darkness finally ended the disaster at Kansas Speedway, where the Chase for the championship field imploded and the finish was in question long after winner Greg Biffle crossed the finish line. Biffle scored his first win of the season by winning a race that was stopped twice for rain delays, was shortened 85 miles because of darkness, ended under caution and saw six Chase drivers finish 29th or worse.

Last year: Brian Vickers stole his first Cup victory by nudging teammate Jimmie Johnson into race leader Dale Earnhardt Jr., then skirting by the two spinning cars on the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway. The wreck dropped Earnhardt to a 23rd-place finish, Johnson to 24th and prevented either from making any gains in the Chase for the championship.

Fast facts: Johnson has a six-point lead over teammate Jeff Gordon in the standings, and Clint Bowyer is in third, 14 points out. Tony Stewart, who started the day just two points out of the lead, finished 39th at Kansas and dropped to fourth — 117 points out. The 14-point difference between first and third is the closest after three events in Chase history. … The Car of Tomorrow will be competing on a track longer than 1.33 miles for the first time this weekend. … Dale Earnhardt Jr. has five career victories at Talladega, tying him with Jeff Gordon for most among active drivers. Earnhardt has yet to win this season, jeopardizing his seven-year streak of winning at least one race. … Chevrolets have won 16 of the last 17 Talladega races. … Sixteen different drivers have won this season, the most since 2003 (17). … Biffle ended a 28-race winless streak with his victory.

Next race: Bank of America 500, Oct. 13, Concord, N.C.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Mountain Dew 250

Site: Talladega, Ala.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, (Speed Channel, 10 a.m.); Saturday, race (Speed Channel, 12:30 p.m.).

Track: Talladega Superspeedway (tri-oval, 2.66 miles, 33 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 250.4 miles, 94 laps.

Last race: Polesitter Travis Kvapil broke away from a tight pack with four laps to go and held on to win the Smith’s Las Vegas 350, while former Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve was 21st in his truck debut.

Last year: Mark Martin won the inaugural truck race at Talladega Superspeedway, coming back from a lap down and holding on after series leader Todd Bodine was penalized for passing illegally nine laps from the end.

Fast facts: Mike Skinner took over the points lead at Las Vegas, moving three ahead of Ron Hornaday Jr. Skinner was the runner-up in last year’s race while Hornaday finished 10th. … Toyota has a 19-point lead over Chevrolet in Manufacturers’ standings. Toyota has won nine of the first 19 races this season and needs just two more to successfully defend the title. … Villeneuve is scheduled to run this week.

Next race: Kroger 250, Oct. 20, Martinsville, Va.

FORMULA ONE

Chinese Grand Prix

Site: Shanghai

Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 2 a.m.); Sunday, race (Speed Channel, 2 a.m.).

Track: Shanghai International Circuit (road course, 3.387 miles, 16 turns).

Race distance: 189.672 miles, 56 laps.

Last race: Lewis Hamilton won the Japanese Grand Prix, using his pole position to avoid dangerous spray from rival cars in wet and wild conditions. Rain, spray and even fog caused race organizers to start the race behind a safety car until conditions improved. Hamilton took a 12-point lead in the standings over defending champion and McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso, who crashed out of the race,

Last year: Michael Schumacher won the Chinese Grand Prix, followed by Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Fast facts: Hamilton can become the first rookie to win the world title if he finishes this race leading Alonso by at least 11 points. Hamilton has 107 points, Alonso is second with 95 and Kimi Raikkonen has 90. … Hamilton has four victories this season, tying him with Alonso and Raikkonen for the series lead. … Alonso’s victory in the 2005 event clinched Renault’s first constructors title. … This is the next-to-last race of the season, which concludes in Brazil on Oct. 21.

Next race: Brazilian Grand Prix, Oct. 21, Sao Paulo

NHRA

Torco Racing Fuels Nationals

Site: Richmond, Va.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 3:45 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 11 a.m. (ESPN2, 7 p.m., tape); Sunday, eliminations, 11 a.m. (ESPN2, 7 p.m., tape).

Track: Virginia Motorsports Park.

Last event: Peggy Llewellyn raced to her first national event victory on Sept. 23, topping the Pro Stock Motorcycle field at Texas Motorplex in the competition marred by a wreck that seriously injured Funny Car star John Force. The 58-year-old broke his left ankle and his left wrist and suffered a severe abrasion to his right knee in a wreck with Kenny Bernstein during the Funny Car eliminations, which was won by Tony Pedregon. Larry Dixon (Top Fuel) and Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) also won.

Last year: J.R. Todd raced to his third Top Fuel victory, using a career-best pass of 4.494 seconds to beat Melanie Troxel in the final of the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals in Richmond. Phil Burkart snapped a 53-race winless streak in Funny Car. Three-time Pro Stock champ Greg Anderson also won, while Karen Stoffer topped the Pro Stock Motorcycle field.

Fast facts: This is the final event before the Countdown to One begins. … Force, fourth in the Funny Car standings, will miss the rest of the season because of his injuries. … Connolly has won four Pro Stock races in a row, the last three over three-time series champion Greg Anderson, to pad his lead in the Countdown to Four standings. … Pedregon took over the lead in the Funny Car standings, 16 points ahead of Robert Hight. He defeated brother Cruz in the Texas final. … Bob Vandergriff extended his record streak of futility in final rounds to 0-for 11 after his loss to Dixon at Texas. … Last year’s event was the first for the series in Virginia since 2000. … Wally Parks, who founded the NHRA in 1951 and helped turn drag racing into a legitimate sport, died on Sept. 28 at age 94.

Next event: ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Oct. 28

NASCAR BUSCH

Last race: Kyle Busch slipped inside of Matt Kenseth with just over 17 laps to go, then held off Kenseth’s challenges after a late restart to win at Kansas Speedway. But Busch’s car failed the post-race inspection because the intake manifold did not meet NASCAR specifications, which will likely result in a penalty.

Next race: Dollar General 300, Oct. 12, Concord, N.C.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Justin Wilson won the Dutch Grand Prix on Sept. 2, holding off Jan Heylen of Belgium to clinch his first race of the season. Sebastien Bourdais’ hopes of clinching a fourth straight title were hampered after a poor start forced him to drop from the pole position. It was the Frenchman’s first loss in four races in Europe. Bourdais, who finished seventh, has a 58-point lead over Wilson.

Next race: Lexmark Indy 300, Oct. 21, Surfers Paradise, Australia.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Dario Franchitti claimed an unlikely victory at Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 9 and won his first IndyCar Series title in what might be his farewell to open-wheel racing. The difference for Franchitti in the PEAK Antifreeze Indy 300 was his ability to squeeze out half a lap more than Scott Dixon on their final load of fuel, with the New Zealander running out of ethanol while leading two turns from the end of the 200-lap race.
