Students turn on to light bulbs

Lisa Leinberger The Spokesman-Review

Students from the Garfield Alternate Parent Participation Learning Experience program are learning about conserving power and the environment.

The students met with Mayor Dennis Hession before the City Council meeting Oct. 1.

The mayor gave them a tour of City Hall and the kids led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance before the meeting.

Hession read a proclamation which declared Oct. 3 as “Change-A-Light, Change the World Day.” The proclamation encourages every household to change an incandescent light bulb with a more energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb.

The students were participating at City Hall in conjunction with their Environment in Action program of study.

The students are learning about conservation and how to care for the environment.

They are planning a large community service project which will power the three APPLE classrooms with solar energy in the coming months.

Students will sell CFL bulbs for $5 each starting in late October or early November. The funds raised will go toward a solar array panel to power their classrooms. The students will gift the school with the panels.

The rest of the funds for the panels will come from a grant from the Bonneville Environmental Fund.

“We’re equipping the students with a lifelong belief that they can change the world,” said Dan Burgess, a parent of two students in the APPLE program at Garfield.

The students have set a goal to have the solar array installed in the school by Earth Day 2008.
