What: “Alaska Walkabout,” free multimedia program about trekking across The Last Frontier state.

Who: By Marty Zajanc of Polson, Mont.

When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.

Where: Spokane Community College Lair-Student Center auditorium.

Details: Zajanc, 54, has seen 33 grizzly bears in one day, a white wolf and sunsets that last hours in his 3,000-mile journey completed in annual month-long trips from 1996-2006. He started with little more than basic fishing gear, inflatable raft, rifle, camera, compass, tent, sleeping bag, pot, bowl, journal and a map of Alaska torn out of an atlas.

OUTFLOW

Time to paddle on Priest River

Avista will begin the annual drawdown of Priest Lake on Oct. 15, marking the unofficial beginning of the paddling season on the Priest River.

The river – generally too low for canoes during the summer season – takes on new life as flows are increased through Priest Lake Dam as Priest Lake is lowered 3 feet to its winter level by early November.
