The Spokane Farmers’ Market Association plans to use $32,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement a new program that will allow customers to pay using food stamps, credit and debit cards next year. The grant money also is slated to help fund a nutrition-information program.
“ Washington’s minimum wage will increase 14 cents to $8.07 an hour beginning Jan. 1. The state Department of Labor and Industries recalculates the wage every fall based on changes in the federal Consumer Price Index.
WEDNESDAY
The Kohl’s department store chain held grand openings for stores in Spokane’s NorthTown Mall and in Coeur d’Alene. The Wisconsin-based retailer opened 80 stores nationwide Wednesday and planned to add another 15 next month. Kohl’s also is building a store in Spokane Valley, city planning documents show.
“ Spokane’s University District and Pullman’s Industrial Park each will benefit from $1 million state grants issued this week by Gov. Chris Gregoire. The governor distributed the grant money to areas identified as “Innovation Partnership Zones,” which state officials hope will drive regional economies by uniting higher education, research and business.
THURSDAY
The city of Cheney wants to use a $1.48 million federal grant to create a 38-acre research and industrial park, with assistance from a box manufacturer there. Officials envision the park on the southwest end of town attracting new jobs and tax revenues.
“ Dennis Pence will retire from day-to-day operations as CEO of Coldwater Creek Inc., but will continue to lead the women’s apparel retailer as chairman of the board of directors. Pence, 57, suffered a mild heart attack in mid-September but is expected to make a full recovery.
FRIDAY
The family that owns Liberty Lake-based cabinetmaker Huntwood Industries is launching a “family-friendly” movie and TV show production company. Hunt Entertainment Group LLC will look to make feature films for theatrical release and has pledged up to 36,000 square feet of space for a soundstage and office in Liberty Lake.
