Endorsement time
Leaves are coming down. Campaign signs are going up. There must be an election coming.
Yes, there is, but regular readers of this page already could tell from the political discourse that’s been building in letters to the editor.
As usual, the editorial board is also evaluating the candidates and measures that will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballots in Spokane and Kootenai counties.
Beginning Tuesday, our endorsements will appear according to the schedule below. Although the election is a month away, ballots are being cast earlier and earlier as voting by mail becomes more popular, especially in Spokane County and other jurisdictions where that’s the only option.
Ballots will be in voters’ hands soon, and the endorsements begin this week. They won’t appear every day; it will just seem like it.
Tuesday – Spokane races for mayor, City Council president and three City Council seats
Thursday – Post Falls City Hall preservation and Spokane County Proposition 1 (Conservation Futures advisory measure)
Saturday – Spokane and Central Valley school board positions
Sunday – Washington state ballot measures: Initiative 960 (tax votes); Referendum 67 (insurance claims); ESSJR 8206 (state rainy day fund); SJR 8212 (inmate labor); EHJR 4204 (simple majority for school levies); SHJR 4215 (higher education fund investment)
Oct. 15 – Spokane Valley City Council seat and Liberty Lake mayor
Oct. 17 – Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls City Council seats
Oct. 20 – City of Spokane park facilities bond issue
Oct. 21 – Spokane County Proposition 2 (sales tax for emergency communications facilities)
