Vikings pick up state bid

Coeur d’Alene High senior forward Jordan Correia had a hat trick earlier in the season, but Vikings boys soccer coach Eric Louis called Correia’s no-goal game Wednesday his best of the year.

“His work rate was outstanding,” Louis said. “Production and work rate are two different issues. He didn’t score, but he’s big and strong and physical and he pesters them. He plays it off and they don’t get a chance to hit him or anything. He’s crafty like that. He’s a good goal scorer, but he’s been playing pretty team oriented.”

Correia had an assist to go along with several nice passes and a couple of scoring opportunities as top-seeded Coeur d’Alene earned a state berth by shutting out visiting Post Falls 3-0 in a 5A Region I tournament match.

CdA (14-0-3) plays host to No. 2 seed Lake City (9-6-1) in the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday. LC also earned a state berth by blanking Lewiston 3-0 on Wednesday.

The Vikings peppered the goal early before they broke through in the 31st minute. Robby Astin’s top-spinning shot from 24 yards out curled just under the crossbar near the right corner for the lone goal in the first half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Jonathan Schmehl got loose 3 yards in front of the goal and took a feed from Correia for the Vikings’ second goal. Mitchell Kohles chipped in the final score from point-blank range on a long pass from Hayden Walker with 3 minutes remaining.

CdA finished with 16 shots to two by Post Falls (3-12-2).

Marissa Watson and Camille Reynolds scored for the Hawks (2-12-3) during the shootout. Moscow advances to next week’s state tournament in Pocatello.
