Pedal, sniff, taste Oregon in the fall

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Enjoy the colors and tastes of the season in Oregon this fall.

Through Nov. 30, vintners, brewers, farmers and innkeepers participate in Oregon Bounty, a statewide promotion with events ranging from winemakers’ dinners to the Village Mushroom Fest, Friday through next Sunday in Yachats (www.traveloregon.com/Bounty.aspx).

The Hood River Valley Harvest Fest is scheduled next weekend in Hood River, with craft and art exhibits, food, music, local produce, and a quilt raffle (www.hoodriver.org/).

While you’re in Hood River, rent a bike and head for the Mosier Twin Tunnels by taking a beautiful ride along the Columbia River Gorge. Be prepared for some uphill pedaling on the way there; the views are worth it.

The 40-mile drive between Hood River and Government Camp, located on Mount Hood, is a lovely, leisurely ride past numerous farmstands and wineries, perfect for a lazy weekend outing with plenty of stops along the way.

The drive, along Route 35, is part of the Mount Hood Scenic Byway (www.byways.org/explore/byways/61400/).

At Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, the Timberline Lodge Art Show runs through Oct. 23. This year’s theme, “In The Shadows of Mount Hood,” celebrates arts and crafts by local mountain residents (www.timberlinelodge.com).

Enjoy natural fall colors with a hike up Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge, a visit to the Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park, or a tour of seven historic covered bridges along a 20-mile loop off of Route 5, starting in Cottage Grove, south of Eugene, in the Willamette Valley.

You can get fall foliage information for various areas of the state at (800) 547-5445.

If you work up a thirst along the way, a series of festivals is showcasing freshly harvested hops in “wet hop” beers, including Saturday at the Ninkasi Brewing Co. in Eugene, and Oct. 27 at the Deschutes Brewery in Bend (www.traveloregon.com/bounty/BreweryHopFestivals.aspx).
