Weather Extremes
For the week of Oct. 7 to 13, there were an incredible 321 records broken. Most of the extremes occurred Oct. 7 and 8 as an early fall heat wave baked the eastern third of the country.
The extremes included 201 high temperatures, 25 low temperatures, 25 rainfall records and one new snowfall record. The rest were high-minimum and low-maximum extremes.
On Oct. 7, there were a number of 90-degree readings. Cincinnati and Indianapolis saw a record 90 degrees. Bowling Green and Louisville, Ky., soared to 93 degrees. Evansville, Ind., and normally mild Raleigh-Durham, N.C., also recorded a record 93 degrees. It was hot Oct. 8 as Huntington and Charleston, W.Va., soared to 93 degrees.
Most low-temperature records last week were in the Southwest. Flagstaff, Ariz., dropped to a frigid 19 degrees Oct. 7. Paso Robles and Lancaster, Calif., reported record lows of 36 degrees the same day.
