Education notebook: Stevens, Whitman schools honored

Stevens and Whitman Elementary schools have received a 2007 Learning Improvement Award and the designation of School of Distinction by Washington’s superintendent of public instruction.

The top 5 percent of elementary, middle and high schools in Washington State received this distinction for showing outstanding growth in reading and mathematics during a six-year period.

Out of 2,500 schools in the state, 51 elementary, 20 middle schools and 15 high schools received this distinction.

To be considered for the award, the schools had to meet the current year’s state learning goals on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning in both subjects.
