NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Subway 500

Site: Martinsville, Va. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (ESPN2, 12:30 p.m.); Sunday, race (ABC, 10 a.m.). Track: Martinsville Speedway (oval, 0.526 miles, 12 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 263 miles, 500 laps. Last race: Jeff Gordon staked his claim to the Nextel Cup title, winning his second straight race to widen his lead in the Chase for the championship standings. His sixth win of the season gave him a 68-point lead over teammate Jimmie Johnson with five races to go in the Chase. Last year: Johnson took the lead from Bobby Labonte with 55 laps to go and held it through several restarts to win the crash-filled Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Fast facts: Gordon leads all active drivers with seven wins at Martinsville. Johnson has three, including last year’s event and the Goody’s 500 on April 1. … Bowyer is third in the standings, 78 points out. Tony Stewart trails Gordon by 198 points while sitting fourth. … Kyle Petty is expected to take sole possession of fifth place on the career series start list with No. 809 this weekend. He is currently tied with Darrell Waltrip. … Juan Pablo Montoya still has a 15-point lead over David Ragan in the Rookie of the Year chase. … Virginia native Ricky Rudd will likely be making his last start at Martinsville. He announced his retirement in August. Next race: Georgia 500, Oct. 28, Hampton, Ga.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Kroger 200

Site: Martinsville, Va. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 8 a.m.), race (Speed Channel, 11:30 a.m.). Track: Martinsville Speedway (oval, 0.526 miles, 12 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 105.2 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Todd Bodine barely held off Rick Crawford and Johnny Benson in a three-wide finish at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 6. Bodine was out front for a restart with two laps to go on the 2.66-mile oval, with Crawford and Benson close behind in a single-file line of competitors. It stayed that way until the final corner of the 94-lap race, when Crawford drove high on the steeply banked track and Benson ducked below Bodine. That’s the way they drove across the finish line, with Bodine beating Crawford by 0.014 seconds — about the length of a hood. Last year: Jack Sprague took the lead when NASCAR took it away from Ted Musgrave with 61 laps to go and won for the first time in 13 career starts at Martinsville Speedway. Musgrave, who hoped to run the entire 200-lap race without a pit stop, grabbed the lead from Sprague on the 34th lap and held it through several restarts until the 138th lap, when he was penalized for an improper restart after several warnings. Fast facts: Ron Hornaday Jr. took over the series lead by 14 points over Mike Skinner — the third time the two have swapped the top spot in the past four races. There are five races to go. … Sprague is expected to make his 400th Nextel national series start this weekend. … Toyota can clinch the manufacturers’ championship with either a win this weekend or by finishing ahead of Chevrolet and Ford. Toyotas have won the last three truck races at Martinsville. Next race: EasyCare Vehicle Services Contract 200, Oct. 27, Hampton, Ga.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Lexmark Indy 300

Site: Surfers Paradise, Australia Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 9:15 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 9:20 p.m., race (ESPN Classic, 8:30 p.m.). Track: Australian Street Circuit (temporary road course, 2.795 miles, 12 turns). Race distance: 1 hour, 45 minutes. Last race: Justin Wilson won the Dutch Grand Prix on Sept. 2, holding off Jan Heylen of Belgium to clinch his first race of the season. Sebastien Bourdais’ hopes of clinching a fourth straight title were hampered after a poor start forced him to drop from the pole position. It was the Frenchman’s first loss in four races in Europe. Bourdais, who finished seventh, has a 58-point lead over Wilson.

FORMULA ONE

Brazilian Grand Prix

Site: Sao Paulo Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 9 a.m.); Sunday, race (Speed Channel, 8:30 a.m.). Track: Interlagos, Jose Carlos Pace (road course, 2.671 miles). Race distance: 189.641 miles, 71 laps. Last race: Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari won the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren missed his chance to clinch the drivers’ title by spinning out entering the pits. One of three drivers can win the title in the final race of the season this weekend. Hamilton has 107 points, Fernando Alonso has 103 and Raikkonen 100. Points are awarded on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
