Washington Prep Roundup: Panthers seal deal
Meg Ryan had 10 kills and Karyn Mockel added 31 assists and five aces as the Mead volleyball team wrapped up their fifth straight Greater Spokane League volleyball title and the top seed heading into the District 8 4A playoffs with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 victory Thursday over visiting North Central.
Nicole Graybeal had 17 kills to lead the Indians (2-8), who will participate in the District 8 3A playoffs beginning Oct. 27 at Mt. Spokane. NC will play East Valley in the first round with Mt. Spokane getting a bye.
The Panthers (10-0) and Shadle Park (9-1) will have byes in the first round of the 4A districts, which start Tuesday. The openers have No. 6 Gonzaga Prep (3-7) at No. 3 Lewis and Clark (8-2), and No. 5 Central Valley (3-6) at No. 4 University (6-4).
Elsewhere in the league, Eileen Chatfield, Kasey Jurich and Diana Drury had 11 kills apiece to lead U-Hi (6-4) to a 25-11, 25-23, 26-24 win over visiting East Valley (5-5). Justine Simpson had seven kills and Kelsey Kurtz added 15 assists to lead the Knights. … Halee Brown had 17 assists and three aces to guide G-Prep to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 win over host Rogers (0-10). Rochelle Griffith had eight kills to lead the Pirates. … Lexie Petersen, Brianne Brown and Stacey Kent had 10 kills each to lead Shadle to a 25-20, 16-25, 25-12, 25-15 win over visiting Mt. Spokane (7-3). Caitlin Barschig had 11 kills to lead the Wildcats.

“Colfax (9-0) defeated host Lakeside (8-2) 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 in Nine Mile Falls and clinched first place in the Northeast A League. Colfax and Lakeside will have byes entering the first round of the District 7 1A playoffs, which begin Tuesday. Kettle Falls (0-9) and Chewelah (6-4) will play at Lakeside while Newport (2-8) and Freeman (4-6) will play at Colfax. Both matches begin at 5 p.m.
“Springdale (7-2) secured first place in the Panorama 2B League with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 win over visiting Selkirk (4-5). Northport (9-0), with its 25-23, 14-25, 25-17, 13-25, 15-8 win over St. George’s (6-2), wrapped up the 1B title.
“Christina Webb had 19 kills and six blocks to lead Northwest Christian to a 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 16-14 win over Lind-Ritzville in the first round of the Bi-County League playoffs. Hannah Descoteaux added 35 assists for the Crusaders. … In other first-round action, Aly Peone had 26 assists and four aces to guide Reardan to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 win over Valley Christian. The Indians will play Northwest Christian in the second round Saturday at Lind-Ritzville.

Kaitlin Whitfield’s goal off an assist from Tanya Baker in the 65th minute gave Cheney (13-2, 12-1) a 2-1 win over visiting Pullman (13-2, 11-1) and moved the Blackhawks ahead of the Greyhounds into first place in the Great Northern League South Division. Kendra Heim scored in the 48th minute for Pullman after Kaitlyn Proctor’s goal 4 minutes into the match gave Cheney a 1-0 advantage. Both teams have one regular-season match left. … Elsewhere in the GNL, North Division-leading West Valley (12-3, 10-3) knocked off visiting Deer Park (5-10, 4-8) 6-2. Dee Dee Garbe had three goals and an assist and Kaley Way scored two goals within the first 5 minutes to lead the Eagles. … Whitley Luu had a hat trick and Andrea Walfton and Jody Noreau added two goals apiece to lead Colville (5-9, 4-9) to a 7-0 victory over visiting Chewelah (0-14, 0-12). … Brandy Adaszewski scored in the 81st minute to give Lakeside (9-6, 8-4) a 3-2 win over host Clarkston (2-12, 2-11). Adaszewski also scored in the 33rd minute off an assist from Brittany Cochrane.
