NHL roundup: Crosby provides difference in Penguins’ win
Sidney Crosby had the winning shootout goal and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Friday night in Pittsburgh.
All three Penguins shooters scored in the shootout against Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward. On Crosby’s goal, he went from his backhand to his forehand. Crosby also added two assists for Pittsburgh.
Carolina winger Scott Walker left the ice late in the second period because of what the team called a torso injury.
Blackhawks 5, Avalanche 3: At Chicago, Tuomo Ruutu tipped in Magnus Johansson’s shot from the point with 1:25 left in the third period to snap a tie and the Blackhawks rebounded from a three-goal deficit to beat Colorado.
Robert Lang added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left.
Kings 4, Canucks 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Mike Cammalleri scored his NHL-leading eighth goal as part of a three-goal outburst in the second period in Los Angeles’ win.
Blue Jackets 3, Sabres 0: At Buffalo, N.Y., Pascal Leclaire made 21 saves for his third shutout of the season and fourth overall, and Rick Nash had a goal and an assist to help Columbus beat the Sabres.
Nash scored in the second period, 62 seconds after he was denied by goalie Ryan Miller on the NHL’s first penalty shot of the season.
Lemieux gets paid
Pittsburgh co-owner Mario Lemieux will get $21 million as part of the team’s settlement of its 1998 bankruptcy.
“He’s finally getting paid from his playing contract that he signed in 1992,” team spokesman Tom McMillan said.
Lemieux was owed $32 million in deferred compensation from that contract when he retired as a player in 1997. But the team filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the next year, after running up $120 million in debt under former owners.
