Smoke causes evacuation of 20

The Spokesman-Review

A senior citizens apartment complex was evacuated early Monday in Pullman after a stove-top fire caused smoke to fill the five-story building.

No one was injured in the small, 3:30 a.m. fire, but 20 residents of the Pioneer Square Apartments at 220 S.E. Kamiaken had to be sheltered overnight at the senior center at Pullman City Hall until the smoke cleared.

According to a news release from the Pullman Fire Department, the fire started when a resident in one apartment turned on a burner without realizing it and covered it with a burner cover. Heat from the burner set the cover on fire and damaged wooden cabinets in the kitchen. That resident will be placed in a motel until his apartment can be repaired.
