State title contenders: Eagle, Idaho Falls, Boise, Capital

At a glance: Each team plays two matches the first day. Second-round matches begin at 3:30 with the last match at 8:15. Eagle, which finished 38-0 last year, hasn’t lost a match to an Idaho team in two years. Eagle’s losses this year were at a high-power tourney in Nevada. The Mustangs are led by senior Brittany Hewitt, a 6-foot-4 senior who will play at Hawaii next year, senior Brynn Blickenstaff, who is also expected to play in college, and the Odale sisters – junior McKenzie and sophomore Morgan. … Eagle and Idaho Falls have accounted for the last five state titles. In addition to last year, Eagle won in 2002, and IF won three straight between Eagle’s titles. … IF coach Wendy Johnson said the biggest difference between the team that won three straight and this year’s team is size. “We’re the mighty midgets,” Johnson said. “We’re very, very short, but we’re very athletic and have good ball control.” … Coeur d’Alene and Lake City both qualified for state last year, but they went 0-2 in brief appearances. CdA figures to challenge for a trophy considering the core of its team played at state last year. The Vikings are led by juniors Hanna Johnson, Kama Griffitts, Shelby Robb and Natalie Stewart along with senior Maggie Reno. The core of LC’s team is juniors and sophomores.

2006 champ: Sandpoint

State title contenders: Sandpoint, Bonneville, Skyview, Century

At a glance: Each team plays two matches the first day. Second-round matches begin at 3:30 with the last match at 8:15. A rematch of last year’s state final will likely occur in the second round between Sandpoint and Bonneville. … Bonneville coach Chantel McMurtrey calls serving her team’s “bread and butter.”

First-round matches: Match 1: Fruitland (14-0) vs. Priest River (10-10), 8:30 a.m.; M2: Kimberly (17-4) vs. Sugar-Salem (31-6), 10; M3: St. Maries (23-5) vs. Weiser (10-6), 11:30; M4: Bear Lake (21-15) vs. Shelley (33-12), 1 p.m.

2006 champ: Sugar-Salem

State title contenders: Sugar-Salem, Shelley, St. Maries, Fruitland

At a glance: Each team plays two matches the first day. Second-round matches begin at 3:30 with the last match at 8:15. Sugar-Salem returns the core of its team. The Diggers are led by junior outside hitter Brooke Hansen. In addition of its state title in volleyball last year, Sugar-Salem also captured championships in basketball and track.
