Locally: Fab Sixties win gold at Senior Games

The Fab Sixties, a basketball team made up mostly of players from Eastern Washington, took first place in the 60+ division at the Huntsman World Senior Games Basketball Championships, which wrapped up Oct. 19 in St. George, Utah.

The team opened with a 74-57 win over Sacramento before losing their only game, 71-66 to Utah. The squad bounced back with wins over Nebraska and Seattle and routed another team out of California 81-59 to earn the gold medal.

Fab Sixties team roster: Tedd Nealey (Spokane), Jerry Skaife (Spokane), Darryl Knott (Wenatchee), Jerry Reeves (Pullman), Terry Nealey (Dayton), Randy Dolven (Kennewick), Dave Hovde (Prescott), Dick Rubenser (Dayton) and Al Reiners (Boise, Idaho).

Cross country

Montana State runners Nick Atwood (East Valley) and Kelvin Daratha (Mead) competed at the 2007 Pre-Nationals, hosted by Indiana State on Oct. 20.

Atwood finished 55th overall, covering the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes and 11 seconds. Daratha was 228th with a time of 26:11. The Bobcats men finished 32nd in the 38-team Blue Division.

Bowling

Mike Federico defeated Todd Benner 223-209 to win the Junior Bowlers Tour stop Oct. 20 at Sunset Lanes. Benner finished second.

Michael Johnson had the high game with a 257 and the high series with 919 to move from 16th to second before roll-offs. Johnson took third overall. Mark Shepard was fourth, followed by Syafiq Fuller.

Mary Baker’s 204 was the high game for the girls.

Golf

2004 Gonzaga Prep graduate Ellie Brophy shot a two-round total of 163 to earn a tie for third place and help the Yale women’s team finish second out of eight teams at the Lehigh Invitational Oct. 21 in Saucon Valley, Pa.

Skating

Gonzaga Prep freshman Heidi Nelson, 14, placed third in the novice division at the Pacific Northwest Figure Skating Championships held Oct. 18-19 in Mountlake Terrace, Wash.

Next up for Nelson is the Pacific Coast Sectionals, Nov. 15-16 in San Diego.

Miscellany

Spokane’s Frank Vasquez took first place in the 70-74 age division at the 22nd Annual Tram Road Challenge Oct. 13 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Vasquez finished the 5,000-meter race in 48:11.
