NHL : Brind’Amour hat trick carries Hurricanes

Rod Brind’Amour notched his third career hat trick, Ray Whitney and Justin Williams each scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes scored six times on their first 13 shots to rout the New York Islanders 8-3 on Saturday night at Uniondale, N.Y.

Eric Staal also scored for Carolina, which got three power-play goals and another just as a power play ended.

Stars 5, Coyotes 3: At Glendale, Ariz., Mike Modano had a goal and an assist to move within three points of the NHL record for American-born players in Dallas’ win over Phoenix.

Kings 4, Oilers 1: At Los Angeles, Patrick O’Sullivan had his first two-goal game in the NHL, Jason LaBarbera made 34 saves and the Kings beat Edmonton for their fourth straight victory.

Thrashers 3, Blackhawks 2: At Chicago, Ilya Kovalchuk scored a tie-breaking goal early in the third period and set up two power-play scores by Vyacheslav Kozlov to lead Atlanta to a win over the Blackhawks.

Blues 4, Capitals 3: At St. Louis, Brad Boyes scored twice and the Blues defeated Washington.

“Right wing Alexander Semin signed a two-year, $9.2 million contract extension with the Capitals.

Predators 4, Panthers 3: At Nashville, Tenn., Vernon Fiddler scored a pair of goals to lead the Predators to a win over Florida.

Sabres 4, Lightning 3 (OT): At Tampa, Fla., Thomas Vanek scored late in overtime as Buffalo rallied for a victory over Tampa Bay.

Canadiens 4, Penguins 3 (SO): At Pittsburgh, Andrei Markov scored in the eighth shootout round as Montreal beat the Penguins despite blowing an early 3-0 lead.

Senators 4, Devils 1: At Newark, N.J., Ottawa spoiled New Jersey’s first game in the new Prudential Center, scoring three times in the third period.

Maple Leafs 4, Rangers 1: At New York, Pavel Kubina’s first goal of the season woke up the Maple Leafs in the second period and started a three-goal binge against the stingy Rangers that carried Toronto to a victory over New York.

Blue Jackets 2, Sharks 1: At Columbus, Ohio, Sergei Fedorov scored the decisive goal late in the second period, and Pascal Leclaire made 16 saves to help the Blue Jackets beat San Jose for their third consecutive win.

Flyers 2, Bruins 1: At Boston, Martin Biron stopped 38 shots and Mike Richards had a short-handed goal to lift Philadelphia to a win over the Bruins.

“Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was taken from the ice on a stretcher against Philadelphia after losing consciousness when he was hammered into the boards face-first by defenseman Randy Jones.

Bergeron was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and was diagnosed with a broken nose and a concussion by Bruins team physician Dr. Bertram Zarins.
