PLU edges Whitworth in double OT
Derek Karamatic took a pass from Brennan Brown and fired a shot past Whitworth goalkeeper Scott Barnum in the 109th minute to give the Pacific Lutheran Lutes a 1-0 double overtime Northwest Conference men’s soccer victory over the Pirates at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (13-3-1, 11-2) can still clinch the conference title with a win at Whitman next Sunday.
•Ely Allen scored his conference-leading eighth goal and the Washington Huskies (7-6-2, 2-3-1) beat the 24th-ranked UCLA Bruins (8-6-2, 4-2-1) 1-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play.
Women’s soccer
Whitney Ramsey scored two goals and Jael Hagerott equaled the school record for career assists to lead the Whitworth Pirates (15-2, 12-2) to a 2-0 Northwest Conference victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (4-12-2, 3-10-1) at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
•Jackie Garcia scored in the second overtime to give the 11th-ranked San Diego Toreros (12-2-3, 3-1-1) a 1-0 West Coast Confernce victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (10-6-1, 2-3) at Martin Field.
•Amanda Reyes scored two goals to give the Fresno State Bulldogs a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference victory over the Idaho Vandals (4-11-1, 0-4-1) at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow, Idaho.
The Bulldogs (9-6-1, 4-1-1) have allowed only three goals in the past two seasons in WAC play.
•Melissa Beal scored one goal and assisted on the other as the Washington Huskies (5-9-1, 2-2-1) earned a 2-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Oregon Ducks (8-7-2, 1-3-2) at Seattle.
Junior hockey
Alex Lelwica and Bret Kellogg each had a goal and two assists and the Spokane Braves captured a 7-1 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Golden Rockets (2-13-0-0) at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Kyle Bacon, Jamie Thompson, Jake Walsh, Shane Horlacher and Gabe West also scored goals for Spokane (10-7-2-0). Skyler Smutek chipped in with two assists.
