In brief: Indiana assistant resigns amid scandal
Assistant Rob Senderoff resigned Tuesday amid a telephone recruiting scandal that already has cost Indiana one basketball scholarship and coach Kelvin Sampson a $500,000 pay raise.
The NCAA is still conducting its own investigation, which could lead to further sanctions.
“It’s a very strong message,” athletic director Rick Greenspan said of the internal investigation and report to the NCAA. “It’s been delivered by voice, by written word, by action. If you look at the self-imposed sanctions and the corrective actions, an astute person would look at these as very significant … all the way down the line.”
The report, which does not accuse Sampson of any direct NCAA violations, details more than 100 impermissible recruiting calls, most of them by Senderoff. At least 10 of them were three-way calls that Sampson had been patched into, and another eight included incoming calls that couldn’t be identified.

Brazil, which has won a record five World Cups, was awarded the right to host 2014 tournament by FIFA’s executive committee. The South American country hosted the competition once before, losing to Uruguay in the 1950 final.
The unanimous vote came on the same day the 2011 Women’s World Cup was awarded to Germany. Germany beat out Canada.

Two Americans qualify
Bantamweight Gary Russell Jr. and featherweight Raynell Williams qualified for the Olympics with convincing victories and built on the U.S. team’s momentum at the World Boxing Championships in Chicago.
Russell Jr. outpointed fellow 2005 world bronze medalist Ali Hallab of France 22-14 in the round of 16, while Williams was leading 23-3 when his bout with Armenia’s Azat Hovhannisyan was stopped in the third round.
No U.S. boxer has won a gold medal at the worlds since 1999.
“Tickets to the Beijing Olympics went on sale in China on a first-come, first-served basis, but overwhelming demand crashed the computer ticketing system.
More than eight hours after ticket sales began, the online ticketing site had a note saying the system was busy and to check back later. The telephone ticket hot line rang busy all day.
