RiverHawks, Cougars earn all-league honors

Two members of the Spokane RiverHawks and two Washington State players were named to West Coast Collegiate Baseball League all-star teams announced last week.

RiverHawks catcher Tyson Van Winkle from Gonzaga, who had the second-highest batting average in the league (.336), was named to the first team. Second baseman Bryan Horst (UC Riverside) was a second-team selection.

Spokane southpaw Kraig Sitton (Oregon State) tied for the second most strikeouts, fanning 44.

WSU first baseman Jim Murphy, who led the league with four home runs, and Cougars starting pitcher Matt Way, who both played for WCCBL runner-up Corvallis, were first-team picks.

Moses Lake swept a best-of-3 series from Corvallis, both by 3-2 scores, to win the WCCBL pennant.

The champion Pirates had the league co-MVP, versatile Zach Kim, and the Coach of the Year, Gabe Boruff. Other awards went to outfielder Brandon Kuykendall, Kitsap, co-MVP; Paul Applebee, Bellingham, Pitcher of the Year; Curtis Van Wyck, Wenatchee, batting champion (.352); Applebee, ERA champion, 0.60; and Dan Segel, Corvallis, Executive of the Year.

Baseball

Jarek Cunningham, a Mt. Spokane senior shortstop, was named to the all-tournament team at the Area Code Tournament in Long Beach, Calif., early last month.

Cunningham, who has committed to Arizona State, was 5 for 14 in five games for the Washington Nationals squad. (Scouts from major league teams pick the teams). He was the only Northwest player chosen to the all-tournament team.

•Registration and tryouts for the Spokane RiverHawks High School Fall Instructional League will be Saturday at Shadle Park High School.

Players in grades 9-12 may register beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tryouts will begin at 11. Teams will play five Sunday doubleheaders beginning Sept. 16. The league fee is $125, payable at the time of registration.

College scene

Two players from the Spokane area were instrumental in Western Oregon splitting four matches at the Seawolf Spike volleyball tournament last weekend at Sonoma (Calif.) State.

Kayla Mainer, a junior outside hitter from West Valley and North Idaho College, was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 15 kills and 16.5 digs per match. She had her biggest match in a tournament-ending loss to Humboldt State, with 19 kills and 24 digs.

Sophomore setter Amy Herron from Mead averaged 32.7 sets per match and had 11 service aces in 18 games.

Erika Laete of Spokane, who graduated from Evergreen Lutheran High School in Des Moines, Wash., a 6-foot-1 middle hitter, is a freshman on the Wisconsin Lutheran volleyball team in Milwaukee.
