UW wins GU tourney
Eighth-ranked Washington took first place at the four-team Gonzaga Tournament, beating Boise State and Morgan State Saturday at GU’s Martin Centre.
The Huskies (6-0) topped Boise State 30-18, 30-17, 30-19 and then downed Morgan State 30-23, 30-19, 30-12. Senior All-American Christal Morrison was named tournament MVP.
Gonzaga took second after sweeping MSU and BSU. The Bulldogs beat Morgan State 30-23, 30-23, 30-19 and topped Boise State 30-26, 30-22, 30-26 to improve to 4-3 on the season.
•After losing its first match of the season, 30-28, 30-18, 30-20 to Texas A&M (5-0) earlier in the day, Washington State responded with a 30-26, 30-23, 30-23 win over Utah State (2-4) at the Montana State Holiday Inn Classic tournament in Bozeman.
The Cougars (7-1) finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record. WSU’s Maureen Perez and Brittany Johnson were named to the all-tournament team.
•Oral Roberts beat Eastern Washington 27-30, 30-23, 30-15, 30-20 and then San Francisco topped EWU 33-31, 30-20, 30-21 at the PowerAde/Asics Classic in San Francisco.
Hayley Hills of the Eagles (1-5) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging four kills per game in three matches.
•Whitworth finished second in the Las Vegas Blast by winning their final two matches of the tournament.
The Eagles defeated Rivier 30-23, 32-30, 30-19 in the first match and Russell Sage 30-18, 30-11, 30-22 in the finale.
•The University of Idaho’s volleyball team fell 3-1 to Middle Tennessee at the Idaho Classic Tournament in Moscow.
The Vandals fell 30-28 in the first two games before rallying for a 30-21 win in the third game. Middle Tennessee (6-0) regrouped and won the fourth game 30-17.
Sarah Loney had a team-high 19 kills for Idaho (1-6) and Haley Larsen added 18.
No. 21 Oklahoma (5-1) beat the Vandals 30-26, 30-25, 30-21 in the late match.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth (0-1) fell 2-1 to 12th-ranked Trinity (1-0) in a non-conference season-opening match in San Antonio.
Matt Friesen scored the Pirates’ lone goal with just less than four minutes to play.
•Community Colleges of Spokane scored two goals late in the second half to draw a 2-2 tie with visiting Highline CC.
Sasquatch goalkeeper Josh Peck made seven saves.
Women’s soccer
Eastern Washington beat Lamar University 5-0 at the Northern Arizona Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Lauren Koelzer, Kit Rood, Mandy Cheney, Lillian Bourret and Megan Roper all scored goals for the Eagles (1-0), who outshot Lamar 27-4.
•Nikki Zuccarini’s hat trick lifted Illinois Central College to a 4-1 win over CC Spokane in a non-conference game at Spokane Falls Community College.
Christine Almquist scored the Sasquatch’s lone goal in the sixth minute.
•North Idaho and Iowa Western played to a scoreless tie in a non-conference match in CdA.
Alicia Kahler and Kristin Barta each made two saves in goal for the Cardinals (1-1-1).
Football
Adam Perry converted 31 of 46 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns, leading Western Washington (1-0) to a 28-21 win over UC Davis in Davis, Calif.
Tim Plough threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Aggies (0-1).
Cross country
The Whitworth men finished second, while the women placed third at the Whitman Invitational at Fort Walla Walla Park.
Joanne Mayer led the Pirates women, finishing the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 49.62 seconds to claim sixth place.
On the men’s side, Whitworth’s Nick Gallagher took second place, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 19:46.65.
The Lewis-Clark State men and women were the champions.
