Reds 7, Mets 0: At Cincinnati, Brandon Phillips broke the Reds’ record for homers by a second baseman, hitting a two-run shot during a victory over New York. Tom Shearn, a 30-year-old rookie, gave up only three hits in six innings for Cincinnati.
Braves 9, Phillies 8: At Atlanta, overcoming two large deficits, the Braves pulled out a victory over Philadelphia on Matt Diaz’s two-out, bases-loaded double in the ninth inning.
Nationals 6, Marlins 4: At Washington, Wily Mo Pena singled to break a tie in the seventh, leading the Nationals to a win over Florida. Austin Kearns had three hits for Washington.
Brewers 14, Astros 2: At Milwaukee, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart each hit a three-run homer, and the Brewers connected five times to beat Houston.
Cubs 8, Dodgers 2: At Chicago, Aramis Ramirez homered to help the Cubs beat Los Angeles. Ted Lilly allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 solid innings for Chicago.
Giants 5, Rockies 3: At Denver, Barry Bonds hit his 762nd home run to help San Francisco beat Colorado. Pedro Feliz tripled, homered and drove in two runs, and Bengie Molina added a solo home run for the Giants.
Pirates 8, Cardinals 2: At St. Louis, Ronny Paulino was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer, Jack Wilson was 3 for 4 with a three-run double and Adam LaRoche went 2 for 4 with a homer to help Pittsburgh beat the Cardinals.
Diamondbacks 9, Padres 6: At Phoenix, pitching on three days’ rest, San Diego ace Jake Peavy gave up eight runs and Arizona defeated the Padres. Chris Young drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks.
