In brief: Student injured in fall off balcony

The Spokesman-Review

A Washington State University student was seriously injured early Wednesday in a fall at a sorority.

The 21-year-old woman was intoxicated when she fell 10 feet from a fire escape balcony at the Sigma Kappa Sorority house at 720 Northeast Campus St., said Pullman police Commander Chris Tennant.

She was found about 1 a.m. on the ground under the balcony and was unconscious when an ambulance arrived.

She was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital, then to Spokane and eventually flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with possible neck fractures.

“Unfortunately we get these every year,” Tennant said of falls related to excessive drinking.

The woman has not been identified by police or WSU officials, who said Thursday that they hadn’t been able to contact her parents.

118 months given for rape attempt

A Spokane man was sentenced to almost 10 years in prison Thursday after he pleaded guilty last month to breaking into a Shadle Park home and attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint.

The girl, who is the daughter of a police officer, thwarted the attack with a knife of her own.

Richard Allen Turner, 21, pleaded guilty Aug. 2 to first-degree burglary with sexual motivation, first-degree robbery and second-degree attempted rape in connection with the April 15 break-in.

The victim was baby-sitting her cousin at a home in the Shadle Park neighborhood when she fell asleep. When she awoke about 2 a.m., she found Turner crouching beside her as he exposed himself.

Turner, who apparently did not know the girl, mentioned several sex acts he wanted, according to court records.

The girl pulled a knife out of her pocket and told Turner to leave. As the girl’s younger cousin awoke, Turner fled.

Superior Court Judge Ellen Kalama Clark ordered Turner to serve 118 1/2 months in prison. He will be given credit for the time he has already served in the Spokane County Jail.

Man dons bags, stabs woman

Spokane Valley police are looking for a man who broke into one of the Broadway Square apartments early Thursday and stabbed a woman in an apparent robbery attempt.

The attack occurred about 3 a.m. at the apartments at 11910 E. Broadway Ave., said Spokane County sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jones.

“He had a plastic bag over his upper torso and a second plastic bag on his face with eyeholes cut in it. He broke through the glass slider into a room where a man and woman were sleeping,” Jones said.

The woman was wounded on her knee and buttocks during the confrontation, which ended when the male victim threw a shoe at the assailant, scaring him away.

The woman’s knee required stitches, Jones said.

Police attempted to track the assailant but lost his trail at North Pines Junior High School.

Man says he cut off intruder’s ear

A man told police he cut off the ear of one of several men who forced their way into his house and threatened his life.

A man whose ear had been severed was located at a hospital in the area, police spokeswoman Kimberly Anne Kapp said Wednesday, adding that the investigation was continuing. She would not identify the man, the hospital or the 28-year-old man who reported the attack.

“The ear was recovered in the house,” Kapp said.
