After finishing third at the state tournament last year, Cheney continued its winning ways in its Great Northern League opener at home against Medical Lake.
Kellie Zakrzewski scored three first-half goals and Molly McClure had three in the second half as the Blackhawks cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals (0-1, 0-1) on Thursday afternoon.
Cheney (2-0, 1-0) dominated the action, outshooting Medical Lake 26-2.
Elsewhere in the GNL, Dee Dee Garbe had a goal and an assist, leading West Valley to a 2-1 season-opening win over visiting Riverside. Korlynn Hiller’s goal in the 74th minute brought the Rams (0-1, 0-1) within 2-1, but Garbe’s goal 3 minutes later sealed the deal for the Eagles (1-0, 1-0). … Jacy Fitzpatrick and Kyra Sanders scored two goals apiece as Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls (1-1, 1-0) routed host Chewelah (0-2, 0-1) 10-1. “Marisa Watson’s hat trick lifted Lakeland (1-4-1, 1-2-1) to a 3-2 win over host Post Falls in Inland Empire League action. The Trojans (0-4-1, 0-3-1) scored twice late in the match to come within a goal, but that was as close as they would come. Hawks goalkeeper Bonnie Biggs made 13 saves. … In other league action, sophomore Kerry Moller scored four goals, leading Moscow to a 5-1 win over visiting Lewiston (2-3, 2-2).
