Area Roundup: Bulldogs best Huskies
East Valley grad Ben Funkhouser broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 84th minute, giving the Gonzaga men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over 15th-ranked University of Washington at Martin Field.
Taylor Mueller put UW ahead with a goal just 2 minutes into the contest. But George Josten knotted it at one with a goal less than 12 minutes later.
The win marked the first time GU (2-1) has beaten the Huskies (1-1-1) in its past 20 tries. UW leads the series 18-1-1.

Women’s soccer
Senior Brooke Bemis scored on a header off a corner kick in the 108th minute, giving Washington State a 2-1, double-overtime, non-conference win at Gonzaga (1-2-0).
Alison Scurich also scored for the Cougars (2-0), who outshot the Bulldogs 15-6.

Volleyball
Senior Tara West had a match-high 20 kills, leading Washington State to a 30-12, 22-30, 30-17, 30-20 win over Hofstra (5-2) in the opener of the Nevada AT&T Invitational at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno, Nev.
Sophomore Jackie Albright added 16 kills for the Cougars (8-1).

Gonzaga stayed hot with a 3-0 sweep of Northern Colorado (2-7) in the Bulldogs’ second match of the tournament.
Junior Elaina Renius led Gonzaga with a match-high 11 kills and five blocks.
With the victories, GU improved to 7-3, the team’s best start in 16 years.

Sarah Rusch had a match-high 14 kills and Cassie Moore had 19 digs in the Pirates’ loss to the Warriors (4-2).
Earlier, Whitworth (4-2) beat Montana-Western 30-28, 31-29, 25-30, 30-26.
Track and field
Washington State product Bernard Lagat – the first man to sweep the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the World Championships – won the 3,000 at the Weltklasse meet at Zurich, Switzerland, clocking 7:38.77.
In the pole vault, world champion Brad Walker (University of Washington/University High) place fourth at 18 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Russia’s Igor Pavolv jumped 18-10 1/4 to win.
