Oakland, Texas brawl

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Nick Swisher rushed the mound and tackled Texas starter Vicente Padilla after getting hit by a pitch for the second straight day, starting a benches-clearing brawl between the Athletics and Rangers on Sunday at Oakland, Calif.

Padilla hit Swisher in the ribs with a full count pitch in the first inning, a day after Bill White plunked the Oakland outfielder. After Swisher raced to the mound, both benches cleared and Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan dove into the pile.

A’s manager Bob Geren got into a heated argument with the umpires.

Second base umpire Tim Timmons was bumped to the ground during the fray, and plate umpire Chuck Meriwether wasted little time in tossing Padilla and Swisher, who had to be restrained by catcher Kurt Suzuki and several teammates. Nobody else was ejected.

Kevin Thompson replaced Swisher, while Jamey Wright came in for Padilla.

Wright homers to join 30-30 club

David Wright became the fourth-youngest player to reach 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season when he hit a solo drive in the seventh inning of the New York Mets’ 10-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Wright is the 29th player to accomplish the feat and third to do it with New York. Wright, who has 31 steals, joins his hitting coach, Howard Johnson, and Darryl Strawberry as the only Mets players in the 30-30 club.

The 24-year-old Wright has four homers in his last seven games.

Only five players under the age of 25 have recorded a 30-30 season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Bobby Bonds (1969), Jose Canseco (1988), Sammy Sosa (1993) and Alex Rodriguez (1998) are the others. A-Rod is the youngest to do it, joining the club with the Mariners three days after his 23rd birthday.

•Orlando Hernandez will miss his start tonight at Washington, and Mets’ manager Willie Randolph didn’t say when he will return to the rotation. The right-hander can run and throw but is having some discomfort with his sore right foot during his pitching motion.

Brian Lawrence will take El Duque’s turn in the rotation against the Nationals.

Tigers’ Jones saves 300th

Tigers closer Todd Jones became the 21st pitcher to amass 300 saves when he finished up Detroit’s 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins at Minneapolis.

“Great win for us, good for (Jones), off to Cleveland,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

The Tigers won their seventh straight game against the Twins and pulled within 4 1/2 games of Cleveland in the division.
