In brief: Help sought finding two robbers

The Spokesman-Review

Police are looking for information that will help them identify two men who beat and robbed a Spokane Valley property manager July 3.

Secret Witness is offering a reward to help solve the case.

According to a release on the crime, two men forced their way into an apartment as the property manager counted rent money. They threatened the man with a gun, beat him and stole thousands of dollars in cash as well as the man’s birth certificate and passport.

The victim described the men as black, about 6 feet tall and about 190 pounds. Both wore gloves and masks.

Police seek witnesses to parking-lot assault

Officials were looking Wednesday for a man involved in a parking-lot beating that left a man with a severely broken jaw.

The 29-year-old victim pulled his car into the Millwood Tavern parking lot, where six or seven men were standing about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday. One man, 23-year-old Skye C. Baker, told the victim he’d better not park there, according to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office news release.

When the victim returned shortly from the tavern, Baker punched him to the ground while the other men egged the attack on, the release states.

“Just sounds like these guys were in the parking lot, influenced by alcohol, being jerks,” sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan said.

The victim escaped to a nearby 7-Eleven, at 3409 N. Argonne Road, and a second man followed, eventually putting the victim into a headlock and punching him. A customer called 911 as the intoxicated men hopped into a silver Dodge pickup and drove away, according to the release.

The victim was treated at a hospital and released, a sheriff’s official said.

Police tracked down Baker and arrested him for second-degree assault. They were still looking for the man who put the victim into a headlock and were asking possible witnesses to call (509) 242-TIPS. He was described as a 5-foot-8 stocky man with black hair, the release states.

Airport ceremony to include fighter jets

Fighter jets will swoop over Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

They’re part of a ceremony at the Kootenai County Airport, which is being renamed to honor North Idaho native Gregory “Pappy” Boyington – a World War II ace who was one of the nation’s most decorated fighter pilots.

Boyington, who died in 1988, flew with the Black Sheep Squadron.

Fliers from the unit had wanted to be at the ceremony, but the unit’s overseas deployment was recently extended, said Kevin Gonzalez, with the local Marine Corps League Pappy Boyington Detachment 966, which is helping to organize the ceremony.

Saturday’s flyover by VMA 211, the Wake Island Avengers, is expected sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. The planes will land at the airport for the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and arrive early because nearby parking is limited.

Taxi cab left running outside bar stolen

A taxi cab was stolen from outside a Coeur d’Alene bar Monday evening after the driver went inside to see if anyone needed a ride and left the taxi running outside for nearly half an hour.

Matthew Rice of Lakeside Taxi told Coeur d’Alene police that he went inside D’Mouse Trap bar on Appleway Avenue, and when he came outside at 11:52 p.m., the taxi was gone.

According to the taxi company, the 1993 Plymouth Voyager was found abandoned on nearby Julia Street around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
