In brief: Proposed speed reduction on hold

The Spokesman-Review

Spokane County commissioners have postponed a decision on a controversial proposal to reduce the speed limit on the Palouse Highway through Valleyford.

Commissioners decided at a public hearing last week to visit the community before deciding whether to accept county Engineer Bob Brueggeman’s recommendation to lower the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph.

The recommendation was opposed by seven area residents at last week’s hearing, and two others submitted letters of opposition that were read into the record. Just three residents spoke in favor. Brueggeman said he recommended the change to reduce the danger to pedestrians from some 4,000 cars a day that pass through the community on average.

Commissioners agreed to make a decision Tuesday without more testimony. Written comments will be accepted through Friday this week. Comments may be e-mailed to derickson@spokanecounty.org or delivered to: Clerk of the Board, Spokane County Commissioners, 1116 W. Broadway Ave., Spokane, WA 99260.
