Inside our schools: Post Falls passes emergency levy

Paula Davenport The Spokesman-Review

The Post Falls school board last week passed a one-year, $295,000 emergency tax levy to cover the costs of educating an additional 65 pupils.

Total enrollment is 5,284 students in grades K-12, the district reported.

Residents’ bills will increase $2.08 per thousand of assessed value per year. However, that’s less than the previous year’s $2.23 allocation, said Jerry Keane, Post Falls’ school superintendent. The city’s growing population helped lower the per-person fee, he explained.

Car raffle benefits music programs

Post Falls’ sports fans have a chance to really show their Trojan pride, thanks to a gift from the local Knudtsen Chevrolet dealership.

Eve Knudtsen, dealership president, and her brother Eric, dealership buyer, donated a new 2007 Heritage High Roller for a raffle to benefit music programs at Post Falls High School.

A relatively new crossover car, the HHR is a “mix of the 1949 Suburban and the new SSR (Super Sport Roadster),” according to Chevrolet’s Web site.

It’s painted Trojan orange and black. Retailing at more than $17,000, the HHR has a four-cylinder engine that produces up to 220 horsepower. And it’s equipped with GM OnStar Service.

Tickets are $5 each. A winner will be selected during the high school’s Dec. 14 winter music concert.

Tickets are available from PFHS music students and at Trojan home football games. In addition, they’re offered at the school at 773-0581 and from band director Matt Barkley at mbarkley@sd273.com.

PFHS looking for former band members

Previous members of the PFHS band are invited to an Oct. 6 Alumni Band Day at the high school.

“Whether you just graduated or it has been over 50 years since you left PFHS, we would love to have you here to see old friends and former band directors,” wrote PFHS band director Matt Barkley in a press release.

Participants may experience the joys of performing at the noon home football game against Ontario High School.

“If you don’t have your instrument anymore or it has turned into a nice lamp, let us know and we will try to find one for you to play,” Barkley said.

“If you don’t feel like playing in the band, come anyway and bring pictures and memories to share at a reception following the game,” he added.

Registration forms can be downloaded or filed online at www.pfsd.com.

For more information, contact Barkley at mbarkley@sd273.com or call him at 773-0581.

Area teachers win grants

Two area teachers have landed grants for up to $200 from the Idaho Forest Products Commission. They’ll use the funds to subsidize environmental education projects in their classrooms.

Colleen Peloquin will use the grant to take second-graders at Spirit Lake Elementary School on an annual Walk in the Woods field day.

Dottie May Paulson will purchase paper-making supplies for her fourth-grade classroom at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene. Her pupils will practice the craft and will then teach first-graders how to make paper.
