Saturday’s A.L. results
Yankees 12, Blue Jays 11 (10): At New York, after two long days of seemingly endless baseball, Melky Cabrera and the Yankees finally nudged a little closer to a playoff berth. Moments after starting a strong relay that cut down the potential go-ahead run at the plate, Cabrera singled home the winning run in the 10th inning for his fifth RBI to give New York a victory over Toronto.
White Sox 8, Twins 3: At Minneapolis, rookie Jerry Owens went 5 for 6 with three RBIs, and the rest of the Chicago lineup followed his lead in a win over Minnesota. Javier Vazquez used the support for an easy victory, giving up only one hit over the first five innings.
Athletics 9, Indians 3: At Cleveland, with a chance to pop champagne, the Indians couldn’t even clinch a popup. An early misplay on Mark Ellis’ easy infield fly doomed Cleveland, Dan Haren pitched six strong innings and Jack Cust homered as Oakland delayed the Indians from winning the Central.
Royals 7, Tigers 4: At Detroit, Mark Grudzielanek again got the best of Kenny Rogers, collecting four hits and scoring three times as Kansas City moved the Tigers to the verge of elimination.
Red Sox 8, Devil Rays 6: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Boston became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, rallying on ninth-inning home runs by Jason Varitek and Julio Lugo to beat Tampa Bay.
Orioles 11, Rangers 9: At Arlington, Texas, Nick Markakis homered and had a career-high five RBIs, including the go-ahead two-run double that sent Baltimore past Texas.
