In brief: Free children’s safety event Saturday

Parents are invited to bring their children to a free child DNA LifePrint safety event Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the George Gee auto dealership, 21502 E. George Gee Ave.

According to a press release, the program provides parents with the new biometric fingerprinting and DNA identification kit. The kit includes an FBI certified 10-digit fingerprint profile, a color digital photograph of the child, a child safety journal and a home DNA identification kit. Parents will also be given John Walsh’s child safety tips.

Chipping, composting event next weekend

The annual Chipping and Composting event will take place Oct. 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spokane County Fire District 8, Station 2, 12100 E. Palouse Highway, Valleyford.

The event will include ongoing seminars about backyard composting, information about outdoor burning programs in Spokane County and information about protecting your home from wildfires will be available.

Residents in the area can also dispose of their old and illegal burn barrels and trade them in for a plastic compost bin.

There will also be free chipping and disposal of clean and natural vegetation.

Lilac royalty orientation meetings planned

Spokane County high school senior girls are invited to speak with their advisors at school to learn about the process to apply for the Spokane Lilac Festival Royalty Scholarship Program.

Girls must have a 3.0 grade-point average and will receive scholarships if selected to the court.

Seven girls will be selected to serve as Lilac Royalty and will be expected to make appearances throughout the Northwest during spring and summer 2008.

There will be an orientation Wednesday at the Tomlinson Building at the corner of Thurston and Regal at 5:30 p.m., or next Thursday at 7 p.m.
