Area roundup: EWU goes distance to get third straight win

Eastern Washington won its third consecutive five-game match with a 20-30, 30-27, 30-23, 31-33, 15-13 Big Sky Conference victory over visiting Northern Arizona.

Amanda Yausie tied her season high with 51 assists.

Northern Arizona (6-9, 1-4 Big Sky) was led by Kim Babcock’s 33 kills, the third-highest total in NAU history.

“Gonzaga dropped its second straight West Coast Conference match with a 30-22, 30-23, 30-25 loss to Santa Clara at Santa Clara, Calif.

Becky Jones led the Bulldogs (11-6, 0-2 WCC) with 10 kills and Heather Dunn added 21 assists.

Santa Clara (10-7, 2-0 WCC) finished with 52 team kills, led by Brittany Lowe with 19 kills and 11 digs.

“Pacific Lutheran cruised to a sweep of Whitworth with a 30-20, 30-26, 30-20 Northwest Conference win at Spokane.

Beth Hanna and Kelcy Joynt combined for 33 kills to lead Pacific Lutheran (12-3, 6-0 NWC).

Sarah Rusch led Whitworth (7-7, 2-4 NWC) with 10 kills and Cassie Moore had a match-high 26 digs.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga and Portland played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a West Coast Conference match at Portland, Ore.

Ben Funkhouser scored in the sixth minute for the Bulldogs (5-2-1, 0-0-1 WCC) on an assist from John Reha.

Michael Gavin tied the contest in the 80th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out for the Pilots (3-3-2, 0-0-1 WCC).

“Curtis Flourney scored the lone goal for Whitworth in a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over Pacific Lutheran at Parkland, Wash.

Flourney’s goal in the 48th minute was enough for the Pirates (7-1-1, 5-0 NWC) as the Whitworth defense limited Pacific Lutheran (4-5, 2-1 NWC) to four shots on goal.

“Community Colleges of Spokane earned a 5-2 NWAACC victory over host Wenatchee Valley.

The Sasquatch (9-2-1, 8-1 NWAACC) received two goals from Jay Vela.

CCS leads the NWAACC East Division. Wenatchee Valley (6-4, 6-3) is third.

Women’s soccer

Kaylyn Plumb scored the winning goal for Whitworth in overtime to lead the Pirates over Pacific Lutheran 2-1 in an NWC match at Parkland, Wash.

Whitney Ramsey tied the game 1-1 in the 89th minute for Whitworth (8-0, 5-0 NWC).

Melissa Buitrago scored for PLU (2-6-1, 1-4 NWC).

“Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Wenatchee Valley 4-2 in a NWAACC game at Wenatchee.

Christine Almquist had a goal and an assist for the Sasquatch (5-5-1, 5-3-1 NWAACC). Wenatchee Valley (3-6-1, 3-5-1) scored twice in the first 20 minutes, but didn’t score again.

Junior Hockey

The Spokane Braves beat the visiting Creston Thundercats 4-3 in overtime.

Alex Lelwica scored twice for the Braves. Jeremy Anderson and Brett Kellogg also scored for Spokane.
