Penguins end 10-year drought

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Sidney Crosby scored twice and Evgeni Malkin netted the go-ahead goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who clinched their first division title in 10 years with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins secured the Atlantic Division title only two years after they had the Eastern Conference’s worst record and the NHL’s second-worst mark. They also overtook idle Montreal for the East lead by two points. The Canadiens have two home games left (against Buffalo and Toronto), while Pittsburgh ends the regular season Sunday at Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh hadn’t won a division title since taking the Northeast in 1997-98, the season after Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux retired for the first time

Blackhawks 6, Red Wings 2: At Chicago, rookie Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks beat Detroit to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

The Blackhawks, who won their third straight, must win their final two games to have any chance of reaching the postseason.

Devils 3, Bruins 2 (SO): At Newark, N.J., Zach Parise scored the only goal in a four-round shootout and New Jersey beat Boston.

The Bruins are tied with Ottawa for sixth place in the Eastern Conference, while the Devils’ win assured them they won’t finish lower than fifth.

Hurricanes 6, Lightning 2: At Raleigh, N.C., Chad LaRose scored three goals to lead Carolina past Tampa Bay. The Hurricanes, who lead Washington by two points, can clinch the Southeast Division by winning their final game.

Sundin’s season ends

A groin tear will keep Toronto captain Mats Sundin out of the final two games of the regular season, leaving open the possibility that he’s played his last game for the franchise.

Sundin will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
