Ferris hands Titans first defeat

For every run Ferris’ Andrew Kittredge allowed in his second outing this year against University, the Saxons pitcher got an equal number back with his bat.

Kittredge slugged two home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth inning, to drive in five runs of Thursday’s home 12-5 victory over the Greater Spokane League baseball leading and previously unbeaten Titans.

U-Hi (7-1) touched Kittredge for two runs in the top of the first inning before he started a four-run rally with his solo home run in the bottom of the frame.

Kittredge was nursing a 7-5 lead in the sixth when a costly U-Hi error preceded his back-breaking hit.

“I was looking for a fastball count in the first inning and got it,” said Kittredge. “Later on he hung a curve.”

For Ferris (7-3), second baseman Josh Yoshihara and shortstop C.J. Haney combined for five hits, two runs and three RBIs.

“Haney and Yosh had a heck of a game,” said Saxons coach John Thacker.

Neither Kittredge, who allowed 10 hits, nor U-Hi starter Tyler Olson, who gave up 12, were particularly sharp.

“I had trouble locating my fastball. I was leaving it up at times,” Kittredge said.

Thacker said things improved when Kittredge began throwing more change-ups in the middle of the game. He had five strikeouts in the final two innings.

Olson was victimized by several Titans gaffes. The Titans ran themselves out of a three-hit second, twice getting picked off.

A two-out error led to three Saxons runs in the first, featuring Haney’s two-run single through the right side.

“It was a disappointing loss when we were at their place,” said Kittredge, who was beaten 4-0 in that one. “This was huge.”

Tyler Clark had three hits and Michael Holmes two batting in the bottom third of U-Hi’s order. Craig Keeton homered.

Elsewhere in the league, Mead (6-1) moved to within one-half game of first with a 10-0 five-inning win at Central Valley (5-3). Tyler Thoreson lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the final inning. Seth Peterson was 3 for 3 and drove in four runs. … Sam Schaefer hit a two-run double for the lead as North Central (4-6) scored four runs in the sixth at East Valley (3-5), and added another in the seventh to win 10-6. Ben Maxfield was 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Indians and Jake Ellis went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Knights. … Lewis and Clark (1-9) got its first win during a doubleheader split with Mt. Spokane (5-5). The Tigers won the opener 10-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Sage Poland, who went 3 for 4 and scored four runs. Colby Cronn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh, forcing in the winning run of a 6-5 Wildcats victory. … Gonzaga Prep (5-5) scored twice in the first and four times in the second for a 6-3 win at Shadle Park (2-6). Pitcher Bryan Karwacki had a two-run single in the second and struck out eight in six innings. Shadle’s Andrew Roginski was 2 for 4 with a double.

Dave Hauschild went 4 for 6 on the day as West Valley (3-1, 2-0) defeated visiting Deer Park 12-2, 15-8 in Great Northern League action. Tommy Peterson was 4 for 5 with two doubles in the second game for WV. The Stags are 0-5, 0-4
