McGrane in pentathlon hunt

Caitlin McGrane, a University of Puget Sound sophomore from Colville, is second in the women’s heptathlon after Monday’s first day of the Northwest Conference Multi-Events Championships in Newberg, Ore.

McGrane, who won the 100 hurdles, has 2,512 points to the 2,531 for leader Brooke Smith of Willamette. Whitworth’s Kristen Dormaier is fourth with 2,355.

In the men’s decathlon, Whitworth’s Benjamin Spaun is third with 3,389 points. Josh Lovell of Linfield has a 173-point lead with 3,604.

•Idaho’s Russ Winger is the Western Athletic Conference field athlete of the week after winning two discus events last weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

One was with a school-record throw of 199 feet, 6 inches, meeting the NCAA Regional qualifying standard.

High school golf

Lewis and Clark sophomore Chessey Thomas shot a 2-over-par 75 for a five-shot margin over Mead senior Brittany Wilcox and University sophomore Kaitlen Parsons in the second Greater Spokane League competition of the spring, leading LC to a 454-464 margin over Gonzaga Prep in the girls event at the Creek at Qualchan.

LC senior Connor Moran shared boys medalist honors with Robert Seibly of G-Prep and Hank Frame of U-Hi at 2-over 74. The Tigers, with four of the 12 low scorers, had a 390-406 margin over G-Prep.

High school soccer

Taylor Proctor had a goal and two assists to spark Ferris to a 3-1 Greater Spokane League win at East Valley.

High school baseball

TJ Gover pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight in leading Medical Lake to a 12-3 win at Deer Park in the first game of a Great Northern League makeup doubleheader.

In the second game, Alex Wolf’s two-run single highlighted a five-run fifth inning for Deer Park as the Stags pulled out a 6-5 victory.

High school softball

Two Greater Spokane League makeup games, Mt. Spokane at Shadle Park and East Valley vs. Lewis and Clark at Hart Field, were postponed and rescheduled for next Monday at the same sites at 4 p.m.
