Depression glass

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have service for six in Madrid, including cups, saucers, berry bowls, tumblers, salad and soup bowls, pitcher, salt-and-pepper set, gravy boat and sherbets. The set was originally given to my parents as a wedding present in 1938 and is crystal in color. I have been offered $300 for the collection by a neighbor, but that sounds a little low to me. — Betty, Stone Mountain, Ga.

A: I did a little research, and according to Warman’s Depression Glass: Identification and Price Guide by Ellen T. Schroy, your pattern was manufactured by the Federal Glass Company between 1932 and 1939. Pieces were made in amber, blue, crystal, green, iridescent and pink. Iridized pieces were limited to a console set consisting of a low bowl and a pair of candlesticks.

Typical prices for some of the crystal pieces you have include $150 for a 60 oz. pitcher; dinner plates, $24 each; salt-and-pepper set, $95; and gravy boat, $900. As you clearly can see, your collection is worth much more than $300.

Q: My son has collected beer bottles for several decades. He was especially interested in companies that are no longer in existence. Do you think his collection is worth keeping? He is considering a move from Tennessee to California. — Frank, Nashville, Tenn.

A: Only an expert can tell your son if his collection is worth keeping. I recommend you contact one of the better clubs, the Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA), 747 Merus Court, Fenton, MO 63026; bcca@bcca.com; and www.bcca.com.

Q: I have inherited a Minnesota Model “S” sewing machine in a handsome cabinet. I am curious to know what it is worth. I paid $450 for it at an estate sale. — Peg, Pueblo West, Colo.

A: Your sewing machine was made in about 1908. The standard cabinet featured five drawers and a drop head sewing machine with ball bearing stand. According to several experts I contacted, it is worth in the $175 to $275 range.
