Marc Savard came off the bench on a delayed penalty to score with 9:25 gone in overtime Sunday night and the Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens for the first time this season, winning 2-1 in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series in Boston.

Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston, stopping several shots at close range in overtime. Carey Price stopped 29 shots for the Canadiens, who had beaten the Bruins in all eight games in the regular season and the first two of their best-of-seven playoff series.

Montreal continued its dominance in the overtime, testing Thomas continually before the Bruins caught a break when a penalty was signaled in Montreal’s zone. As Thomas headed for the bench, Peter Schaefer controlled the puck and got it to Dennis Wideman.

Savard came in off the bench as the extra skater, and Wideman found him in the middle for the open backhander.

The Bruins haven’t won a playoff series in three previous appearances since 1999; two of those three times they lost to Montreal.

This year, the domination was even more complete: In losing all eight regular-season matchups, Boston didn’t have the lead in a single game, for a single second.

Flyers 2, Capitals 0: At Washington, Martin Biron made 24 saves for his third shutout in four games, leading Philadelphia to a victory over the Capitals and evening up their Eastern Conference first-round series at one game apiece.

R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter scored first-period goals on odd-man rushes, and the Flyers limited league MVP favorite Alex Ovechkin to five shots – only two after the first period. The 22-year-old Russian scored the winner in Friday’s 5-4 Game 1 victory after being stymied for much of the game, but there was no late magic this time for a Capitals team that lacked the energy and creativity it showed two days earlier.

Devils 4, Rangers 3 (OT): At New York, John Madden scored 6:01 into overtime to get New Jersey back into the first-round series against the Rangers.

Madden won a faceoff to the right of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist into the corner. Madden got to the loose puck and centered it. It clipped the right skate of rookie Rangers defenseman Marc Staal and caromed in.

The Devils beat New York for just the second time in 11 games this season.

Flames 4, Sharks 3: At Calgary, Alberta, Owen Nolan scored with 3:45 left as the Flames rallied from a three-goal deficit early in the first period and beat San Jose.

Ryane Clowe, Patrick Marleau and Doug Murray scored in the first 3:33 against Miikka Kiprusoff. Veteran backup Curtis Joseph then replaced Kiprusoff and shut down the Sharks the rest of way.

Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Dion Phaneuf scored for the Flames.
