Airway Heights
City, base named Tree City USA
Airway Heights and Fairchild Air Force Base each have been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
It’s not the first time the communities have made the list, but to become a Tree City each must meet four standards. There must be a legally constituted “Tree Board,” or a department to make sure there is a plan in place to care for community trees; there must be a tree ordinance in place to carry out an annual community forestry plan; the community forestry program must have an annual budget of at least $2 per capita; and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation celebrating tree planning must be held.
Other cities in Spokane County that made the list this year include Liberty Lake, Millwood, Spokane and Deer Park.

Dental students give low-cost care
Dental students from around the state will provide lost-cost dental care as part of the Dental Team Experience Monday-April 25 at Eastern Washington University’s Spokane Campus at Riverpoint.
Five dental hygiene students from EWU, nine dental assisting students from Spokane Community College and three dental students from the University of Washington will deliver high quality, low-cost dental treatment to people in Spokane and the surrounding communities.
Students from the various schools will form teams similar to those in a dental office setting. They will learn how to work together to provide quality dental care to people at fees that are much lower than private office fees. Preceptors at each site will guide the students and oversee the patient care.
In all, the Dental Team Experience will take place over a three week period at various locations, including EWU Spokane. Services will include X-rays, dental exams, fillings, and comprehensive cleanings. Surgical procedures such as root canals, crowns and implants will not be offered.
