EWU sets pace at Big Sky golf

The Spokesman-Review

Eastern Washington and freshman Kellie Holmstedt are setting the pace after the first day of the 54-hole Big Sky Conference women’s golf tournament at Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix.

Both have two shot leads in the tournament that runs through Wednesday.

Holmstedt opened with a 1-under-par 71, leading the Eagles to a 300 team total. After struggling to get to the turn with bogies on holes 7, 8 and 9 following a birdie on No. 6, she parlayed three birdies with six pars on the back side to compile her best score of the season.

Teammate Chelsey Lollar is tied for fifth at 75 as the Eagles’ five are in the top 17.

Northern Arizona is second with a 302. Four schools are within 10 strokes of EWU.

•Washington and Washington State are eighth and ninth, respectively, after Day 1 of the 54-hole Pac-10 women’s tournament in Palos Verdes, Calif.

UW, ranked 28th, is 26 over par at 310 to WSU’s 313, far off the pace of second-ranked UCLA’s leading even-par 284. Third-ranked Southern Cal is a stroke back. UCLA’s Tiffany Joh and Sydnee Michaels share the lead with 2-under 69s.

College baseball

Ryan Wiegand, whose hitting was instrumental in Gonzaga’s 5-0 week, was named co-player of the week in the West Coast Conference.

The junior first baseman, who had three multi-hit games, batted .429 with three home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored. He shares the honor with James Meador of San Diego.

College track and field

Mike Carpenter’s lifetime-best of 17 feet, ¾ inches in winning the pole vault at the Mt. SAC Relays earned the Idaho Vandal men’s field event athlete of the week in the Western Athletic Conference.

In becoming the first Vandal to clear 17 feet, he broke the school record of 16-1 and reached an NCAA regional qualifying mark.
