The pile of chairs and tables in the corner of the Post Falls High School wood shop will soon be going, going, gone – to the highest bidder.

Wood shop students have been working the entire school year building indoor and outdoor furniture for the annual wood shop auction.

The sale of Adirondack chairs, benches, tables, chests, planter boxes, shelves and even a child’s playhouse will help keep the school’s wood shop program running.

Nearly $5,000 has been raised over the past three years, according to wood shop teacher Colby Mattila.

About 100 students in Mattila’s woodshop classes are working on the project. Auctioneer Louis Zirbel will auction off more than 50 pieces of furniture 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the high school. The public is invited to attend.

Zak Archer and Ethan Mahakam put the finishing touches on a shelf Monday.

“It’s fun,” Ethan said. “It goes for a good cause.”

Who is the governor of Idaho?

Only one of the 12 high school juniors that the Athol American Legion Auxiliary interviewed for Girls State 2008 correctly answered the question.

Auxiliary Chaplain Norma Jean Knowles told the students that it’s OK if they don’t know Butch Otter is the governor – they will by the end of Girls State, a weeklong session focused on the workings of government.

Knowles said the experience will give the girls a taste of patriotism and Americanism. During Girls State, participants draft a bill and then try to get the bill sponsored and passed into law.

Seven girls selected to participate include Timberlake High students Becky Radenz, Kaycie Miller and Alyssa Gertge and Lakeland High students Sariah Vieira, Sarah Pokalsky, Katie Larson and Katie Whittaker.

The Athol American Legion, with the help of local sponsors, is sending five junior boys to Boys State.

David Whitt and Justin Boyer will represent Lakeland High and Jarrod Crump, Ammon Johnston and Cody Perez will represent Timberlake.

Art Hoener, the legion’s coordinator for Boys State, said students who attend Boys State, held at Northwest Nazarene University, get a jump on their senior year U.S. Government class.

“They really come back pumped up,” Hoener said.

The week begins with the estimated 300 participants statewide setting up their own governments, from the city to the state levels, dogcatcher on up to governor.

Hoener said it costs $375 for each boy who attends. All but $25 of each boy’s trip is paid for by sponsors including the Athol American Legion, the Athol Sons of the American Legion, Lakeland and Timberlake booster clubs, Spirit Lake Visions, the Hayden Elks, Wal-Mart and Rathdrum Lions.

In this case, Aloha means hello

Frederick Post Kindergarten’s Aloha to Kindergarten is set for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 7. All students entering kindergarten in the Post Falls School District this fall must attend to be registered for school.

They should bring a parent or guardian, too.

Registration is first-come, first-served. There are four kindergarten sessions to choose from and registration is the time for parents to indicate a preference for a schedule.

Teachers meet with incoming kindergarteners during registration and do a brief assessment. Parents should bring up-to-date immunization records and a certified birth certificate.

For questions, call Frederick Post Kindergarten at 777-0479. The school is at 205 W. Mullan Ave.

Registration coming up for kindergarten

Troubadors win division at festival

Singers from Post Falls High did well at last weekend’s Heritage Choral Festival in Seattle.

The Troubadors, the select mixed choir, won the AA division. The Select Women’s Choir came in second in the AA division and the Madrigal Choir came in fourth in the AAA division.
