Woods a bit ‘stir crazy’

Tiger Woods is no longer on crutches since surgery last week on his left knee, but he said Friday in his monthly newsletter that he does not know when he will return.

“The knee has been bugging me for a while,” said Woods. “The only decision was do you miss the Masters or play in the Masters?

Woods had arthroscopic surgery April 15, two days after he finished three shots behind Trevor Immelman in the Masters. It was the second time in five years Woods had surgery on his left knee, this time to clean out some cartilage.

“Needless to say, I’m a little stir crazy,” Woods said. “Although I’ve been through this before and understand the need for patience, I don’t enjoy sitting around. I really don’t have a timetable for returning to competition.

Woods said his hope is to return for the Memorial on May 29.

Red-White today at EWU

Eastern Washington University will host its annual Red-White Spring Football Game at Woodward Field today.

The event, which kicks off at 2 p.m., is open to the public free of charge and will feature a “Red” team, comprised of offensive players, matched against a “White” team of Eastern defenders. According to first-year coach Beau Baldwin, there are not enough healthy bodies available to split into two full teams.

As a result, a special scoring system will be implemented, giving the defense a chance to score points on turnovers, three-and-outs and other big plays. The contest will consist of 12-minute quarters, with the clock operating under game-like conditions.

The Red-White Game, which precedes tonight’s Orland Killin Dinner-Dance-Auction, traditionally caps spring drills for the Eagles, but because of weather- related issues the Eagles will practice three more times next week.

Hansbrough back, may be lonely

North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough, the Associated Press national player of the year last season, will return for his senior year, the school said.

However, sophomores Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will declare for the NBA draft but will not hire agents, leaving open the possibility of their return.
