Locker on target for UW

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

SEATTLE – A third-quarter touchdown drive Saturday demonstrated that Washington quarterback Jake Locker might be ready to add a more accurate passing touch next season to go with his outstanding running abilities.

Locker completed 7 of 7 passes for 65 yards – including an 11-yard touchdown pass to DAndre Goodwin – during the 80-yard drive to highlight the Huskies’ spring game in front of an estimated crowd of 9,000 at Husky Stadium.

“I thought it was very obvious that he knows what he’s doing now and it comes to him a lot easier,” coach Tyrone Willingham said of Locker compared with a year ago. “I thought our two quarterbacks passed the ball very well.”

Reserve quarterback Ronnie Fouch threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Devin Aguilar to lead the Gold team to a 10-7 win over the Purple in the game.

Locker, who completed 13 of of 17 passes for 159 yards with one interception, showed he might be ready to mix in a lot more accurate passing with his running when the Huskies open the season Aug. 30 at Oregon.

“I felt comfortable,” Locker said. “I saw things really well and felt like I was really accurate throwing the ball. I think everythings coming along.”

Goodwin had seven receptions for 109 yards.

“Hes been doing well throughout spring ball and I think he showed the type of leader he’s made himself into and the type of player he’s turned himself into,” Locker said.

Freshman Chris Polk, who graduated from high school early in Redlands, Calif., so he could join the Huskies for spring practice, had four receptions for 25 yards and rushed for 20 yards on five carries.

Tailback Willie Griffin, running for the Gold, led the rushing attack with 71 yards on 20 carries.
