R-Hawks top Pirates
Joe Kent pitched seven strong innings and Cody Reeves had three hits and two RBIs as the Spokane RiverHawks (18-20) defeated the Moses Lake Pirates (12-26) 5-2 Monday at Avista Stadium to close out their West Coast Collegiate Baseball League home schedule.
Kent (2-0) allowed two earned runs while striking out seven. Jake Hiatt worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Spokane entered the night 11/2 games behind second-place Kelowna in the East Division.
Men’s soccer
Defending champion Whitworth has been selected to repeat in the Northwest Conference coaches’ preseason poll.
The Pirates received five of the eight first-place votes and 65 points. Pacific Lutheran was the second choice, with 56 points.
Football
Washington’s leading tackler, linebacker E.J. Savannah, is academically ineligible.
He’s not on the Huskies’ roster for fall camp in Seattle, although he could be added later.
Savannah led the team with 111 tackles last season.
